What often hides behind a pontoon boat that looks fine
William Simard

At first glance, your dock may appear to be in good condition.

The benches are still nice, the canvas is secure, the floor doesn't look too worn... so everything is fine, right?

Not always.

Over the years, several problems can develop without being immediately visible. And it's often when the season starts... that unpleasant surprises appear.

Here's what's often hidden behind a pontoon that “looks fine.”

Moisture: the invisible enemy

One of the most common problems is moisture.

Even if the benches appear clean on the surface, the foam inside may be contaminated with mold. Once moisture settles into the materials, it becomes almost impossible to simply “clean” or save the cushions.

The result: persistent odors, recurring stains... and inevitable replacement.

This is a situation that many owners discover too late, thinking that a good wash will suffice.

The floor: solid... until it isn't

The plywood under the flooring can slowly deteriorate over the years.

To the naked eye, everything may seem normal. But under benches or in certain less visible areas, moisture may have weakened the structure.

The signs often appear gradually:

• Softer feeling underfoot

• Screws that no longer hold properly

• Small water leaks

• Slight deformations

When these symptoms become obvious, the deterioration is already advanced.

Worn seams and materials

Sun, water, and temperature variations put a lot of stress on marine materials.

Even if the fabric or padding still looks good, the seams may be weakened, the fasteners may be loose, or the surfaces may be ready to crack.

Breakage rarely happens “without warning.” It's often simply invisible until it's too late.

Why an inspection is worthwhile

Having your pontoon boat checked before the season often allows you to:

• Avoid more costly repairs

• Plan work at the right time

• Extend the life of your boat

• Improve comfort and safety

Above all, it allows you to make informed decisions rather than reacting to emergencies in the spring.

Every pontoon boat  is different

Two pontoon boats of the same age may have completely different needs depending on their use (fishing, family, leisure, rental), storage conditions, maintenance over the years, original materials, etc.

That's why a personalized approach makes all the difference.

At Canada Pontoon, our goal is to support each owner according to their specific situation, whether it's for a targeted repair, partial restoration, or complete refurbishment.

You can be involved in your project or leave everything to our team. The important thing is that the result matches your boat and your needs.

The right time to act is now

Contrary to popular belief, winter is often the best time to plan or carry out work on a pontoon boat.

Less pressure, more availability, and a boat that's ready when the warm weather returns.
